Abstract
This paper focuses on the characteristics of the Colombian female Bildungsroman. I present the analysis of the characteristics of this subgenre as it is adopted and transformed by Colombian women writers to relate the formative experience and describe the process of identity development of women in their country. In this framework, I seek to contribute to the recent debates -current and scarcely worked in the academic bibliography- on literature written by women, its rescue, study, and characterization. For this purpose, I examine Gérard Genette’s proposal in Figures III (1972) on the structure of stories and their categories of analysis, with the aim of studying the works of Marvel Moreno (1939-1995), En diciembre llegaban las brisas (1987); Silvia Galvis (1945-2009), Sabor a mí (19 94); Consuelo Triviño (1956), Prohibido salir a la calle (1998); Helena Araújo (1934 - 2015), Las cuitas de Carlota (2007); and Piedad Bonnett (1951), El prestigio de la belleza (2011), all of whom have been recognized by literary critics as female Bildungsroman. This analysis takes me to conclude that the adoption of the Bildungsroman by Colombian women writers necessitated the adaptation of narrative strategies employed to depict the experience of a woman’s development in the Colombian context from a female perspective.
