Teching Up Space: Using XR and other DH tools to Enhance Storytelling and Narration

Abstract

This study reviews the planning process for our upcoming project Teching Up Space: The Little Rock 9 Augmented Reality and Audio Engagement Walking Tour. This project seeks to deepen the tour guided experience by providing interactive meaningful AR and sound drop experiences which enhance the storytelling nature of the tour. The design for these interactions will be based on the expertise of the NPS tour guides and education specialists as well as a spectrum of humanist theory and praxis: African American studies, education through performance; contemporary media studies; (serious) game design; and Black Digital Humanities (DH). This project is grounded in digital humanities with Black theory, pedagogy, and praxis being at the center of our frameworks. It seeks to answer these questions, among others: How do we make augmented reality (AR) experiences accessible in existing educational spaces? How can AR and bone conduction technology be used to enhance narratives based on the creation of inclusive, community-oriented research, collaboration and reflection in historical spaces such as the NPS Museum and tour? As a site of education and social gathering, the LRCHNPS is the ideal setting for this project. This project was created through partnership and collaboration with the Little Rock Central High School National Park Site (LRCHNPS) and the World Languages and Digital Humanities Studio at the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville under the direction of PhD Candidate and studio researcher Chy’Na Nellon. The session will identify key processes and tools begin project of this nature.
