Morality in the Times of Dystopia: Sacrifice, Loyalty and Ethical Choices in the World of Divergent

Abstract

This study examines the dynamics and motivations behind the characters’ choices to make personal sacrifice and remain loyal, it sheds light on the depth of their relationships and their unwavering commitment to their beliefs. This study delves into the complicated web of sacrifices made by the characters, especially the protagonist, Beatrice Prior, examining the difficult choices they face and the risks they take for the sake of others. Despite facing treacherous situations, the characters signify firm loyalty and a willingness to support and protect one another. Their selflessness contributes to the development of a profound bond and loyalty in the face of distress. To allocate a comprehensive understanding of the character’s motivations, this study embodies Lawrence Kohlberg’s theory of Moral Development which focuses on how individuals develop their understanding of right and wrong. By applying this framework, the research analyses the character’s moral dilemmas and the reasoning behind their decisions to sacrifice and remain loyal. Kohlberg’s stages of moral development (pre-conventional, conventional and post-conventional) serve as a valuable tool to untangle the characters’ moral growth throughout the narrative. By examining the character’s choices through the lens of Moral Development Theory, this study provides valuable insights into the ethical dimensions of sacrifice and loyalty in a dystopian world.
