Why Classical Music Is Not European: The Global Origins of "Art" Music

Abstract

When thinking of classical music, many people think of Western Europe. They might imagine composers such as Bach or Beethoven, or genres such as the symphony or opera. However, this music has it’s origins outside of Europe with roots from cultural practices in Africa, Mesopotamia, Persia, and China. Research shows that Europeans discovered musical instruments, rhythms, and forms that eventually became what has been labeled European “classical” or “art” music. By learning of these cultural connections, musicians, students, and the general society will come to understand that we are more connected than separate, and learn to appreciate the global origins of the music that has come to be loved by people all across the world. These global music connections will be explained and demonstrated through active audience participation and discussion allowing for attendees to take this message to others.
