"Por Siempre la Llamaré 'Preciosa'": Representations of Puerto Rico in the Arts

Abstract

This paper explores recent iterations of Puerto Rican cultural and national identity that have manifested over the past two decades through a variety of art and cultural genres. Questions of the definition of Puerto Rican identity and how that differs from broader American cultural identity will also be explored. Research is based in historical information as well as ethnography and more recent media observations. As Puerto Rico maintains an unclear status of an America territory being neither “foreign nor domestic,” reflections on Puerto Rican identity and what it means to culturally identify as such continue to permeate every day American socio-political life.
