Starting a Campus Museum: Bringing the Museum Collection and Archives to the Viewer

Abstract

After an extensive inventory of the NDSU archives collection (which included everything from artifacts to various biological species, to artwork and technology), there was an apparent need for a means to maintain the sporadically diverse, and constantly evolving, collection. The lacking component was a way to maintain the cataloging of these items and ultimately unite them in one organized system. All this, despite not having a dedicated museum space in which to display the collection, in addition to keeping it protected and preserved. The artifacts were all being preserved in their own individual departments, but inaccessible to the general campus public. Museum committee founders developed a method of de-centralizing the museum. Instead of one brick and mortal space to house and catalog all these items, a collective understanding between departments would bring out various museum artifacts into public locations throughout the campus community. We are now a year into this process and am happy to present our successes and learned opportunities from this experience.
