Ideology and Image from the Perspective of Materialist Discourse Analysis: A Methodological Experience in the Amazon, Brazil

Abstract

This workshop examines the relationship between ideology and image through Materialist Discourse Analysis (MDA), based on the work of Michel PĂȘcheux, with contributions from Eni Orlandi and other Brazilian theorists. It explores how visual and audiovisual discourses are ideologically constructed, shaping perception and meaning-making. Participants will engage with key concepts such as discursive formations, interpellation, silencing, and resistance, applying them to the critical analysis of media, advertising, artistic, AI-generated, and cinematic images. The session also investigates the role of the subject in visual discourse, addressing identification, disidentification, and ambiguity in meaning production. Through interactive discussions, case studies, and hands-on analysis, attendees will develop critical skills to deconstruct ideological mechanisms in visual representation. Additionally, the workshop explores the educational potential of image analysis, providing methodological tools for research, teaching, and media production. By the end of the workshop, participants will be equipped with a theoretical and analytical framework to critically examine visual discourse, understanding its implications in contemporary society.
