Abstract
This paper considers the work of contemporary poets and videopoets, moviepoets, and performance poets whose work deals with themes that branch out from AI and its impact on forms of algorithm-based technologies that pose threats (and often challenges) to the institution of democracy by transforming technologies which, when abused, pose a threat to democracy: these technologies include those used by the military, the financial sector, and the ways in which democratic systems (for example but not limited to elections) function. More and more, tech change is surpassing the ability of legislative regulation to provide a manageable framework in which this tech change “acts”. So, for example, systems that are used to kill, destroy infrastructure, and manipulate mass opinion find themselves operating in “open fields” in which there is a discourse of human control but that control is hard to find. The study cites examples of poets and videopoets who DO deal with these themes, and call for more, similar work.
