Moving Image as Text: Exploring a Metamodal Methodology.

Abstract

As a film and media scholar that work with teacher education I am interested in how we can use the camera as a writing tool in theoretical subjects in upper level/high school. Therefore, in this workshop, participants will be invited to produce short texts with the camera as a writing tool (they will use their own mobile phones). These texts will ventilate the question “What is the moving images as text”. I will open the session with a 15 mins introduction where I outline the TASC methodology (von Schantz 2024) which is a filmpedagogical methodology I’ve developed at the Department of Visual Arts and Sloyd Education at Konstfack, Stockholm. In addition I will present and situate ‘metamodality’ as a concept which functions to orient the methodology towards an exploration of a subject matter –in this instance the relation between the concepts of ‘text’ in relation to the concept of ‘the moving image’ – through creative engagement with the subject matter. In this way the workshop offers a creative conceptual as well as methodological exploration of the moving image as an epistemological object and a representation of knowledge of and in the world.
