Improving Chinese Internet Healthcare Services for Cancer Post-Treatment Rehabilitation Care in the Context of Telemedicine from a Service Design Perspective

Abstract

This study explores the design and enhancement of Internet healthcare services tailored to the post-treatment rehabilitation needs of cancer survivors in China. As cancer survival rates improve, the demand for continuous, accessible rehabilitation and follow-up care is growing, yet current Internet healthcare services remain insufficient in addressing this need. Although China’s Internet healthcare industry has rapidly developed, its platforms predominantly focus on broader chronic disease management rather than the unique, ongoing care requirements of cancer survivors. Using a service design approach, this thesis identifies and analyzes cancer survivors’ pain points, needs and future expectations, therefore delivering a new service proposal with a multi-sided digital platform to perform human-centered improvements in care continuity, personalized rehabilitation plans, and integrated approach involving oncologist participation, meanwhile driving innovation on the oncologist side to benefit them with significant enhancement in working efficiency. Additionally, this thesis maps out a profitable business model and a desired future ecosystem for the proposed digital platform. As a future vision, this work proposes integrating public health insurance into the platform to make rehabilitation services more affordable and accessible, and it encourages broader engagement from oncologists to foster a more inclusive care network. Ultimately, this thesis aims to contribute to a more responsive, patient-centered model for Chinese Internet healthcare industry, setting a foundation for scalable, technology-enabled support systems for cancer survivors and oncologists.
