Human-Centered AI use in Live Entertainment Stage Management

Abstract

This paper explores the potential of human-centered artificial intelligence (AI) to transform stage management practices by reducing cognitive and logistical stress, thereby enhancing the well-being and effectiveness of stage managers. Stage management is a high-pressure role requiring constant multitasking, coordination, and communication under demanding conditions. Existing research highlights the toll of chronic stress and overwork on stage managers, underscoring the need for innovative solutions to alleviate these challenges. Drawing on a human-centered AI framework, this paper examines how AI tools designed for scheduling, communication, documentation, and predictive maintenance can augment rather than replace human expertise. The focus is on AI systems that streamline routine tasks, enhance decision-making, and improve situational awareness while preserving the creative and collaborative essence of theater production. By designing AI tools that prioritize user control, explainability, and inclusivity, stage managers can focus more on leadership, artistic coordination, and interpersonal interactions — aspects that remain distinctly human. Through a qualitative review of existing AI applications and exploratory interviews with stage management professionals, this paper outlines practical guidelines for integrating AI into stage management in ethically responsible and context-sensitive ways. It also addresses technical limitations, ethical considerations, and adoption challenges, offering a roadmap for future development. Ultimately, AI, if carefully implemented, can enhance stage management by reducing stress and improving work-life sustainability, contributing to more humane and efficient theater production processes.
