Medal Performance by City-States in the Ancient Olympics

Abstract

In contrast to the Modern Olympics, about which there is a considerable amount of information about performance – and, of relevance to this paper, the performance of the participating countries in terms of medals won - there is much less information for the Ancient Olympics about the corresponding performance of the competitor city-states (both the Greek city-states and their colonies in Italy and in modern Turkey and Italy). This study attempts to fill this gap by using a unique database provided by the website www.olympedia.org. Using these data, this paper seeks a better understanding of performance of the city-states participating in the Ancient Olympics both overall, and in terms of event-specific, performance.
