Abstract
This study explores the integration of mindfulness-infused art therapy (MABT) as a holistic approach to enhancing well-being and performance among athletes by combining mindfulness practices with culturally resonant art-based activities. Mindfulness fosters present-moment awareness, emotional regulation, and mental clarity, while art-based therapy offers athletes a meaningful outlet for self-expression that resonates with their cultural heritage. The research focuses on how MABT can support athletes in managing stress, improving focus, and promoting self-discovery, particularly within the context of their unique cultural identities. The intervention integrates mindfulness exercises, such as breathing techniques and body awareness practices, with art activities deeply rooted in local cultural traditions. For instance, in a Malaysian context, drawing, singing, and dancing are used to connect athletes to their cultural roots while simultaneously encouraging emotional processing and resilience-building. The study employs a mixed-methods approach, with pre- and post-intervention quantitative assessments on stress levels, self-efficacy, and focus, paired with qualitative interviews to capture athletes’ experiences and personal reflections. Findings indicate that the combination of mindfulness and culturally relevant art practices significantly reduced stress and enhanced emotional regulation, while also promoting a deeper sense of cultural connection and self-awareness. Athletes reported improved focus and mental clarity, which translated into greater confidence and resilience in their sport. This study highlights the potential of MABT as an effective, culturally sensitive intervention for supporting athlete mental health and performance, offering valuable insights into the integration of mindfulness and expressive arts within diverse athletic populations.
