Abstract
Play is an aspect of early childhood learning. However, learning centers are designed to achieve specific educational goals. In early childhood education classrooms, learning centers are designated spaces where children engage in a variety of interactive, hands-on activities, serving as environments where play and learning converge. These centers allow students to rotate through activities individually or in small groups, reinforcing lessons and enriching their academic skills. Young children often face challenges when learning mathematical concepts, as traditional teaching methods may fail to engage students, address their developmental needs, or tend to neglect real-world examples. This study explores the impact of incorporating learning centers into UAE primary classrooms to enhance mathematical skill development. The objective was to examine the effects of learning centers on Grade 2 students’ basic math skills through a comparative study. A group of 22 students participated in learning center activities, while 25 students followed traditional teaching methods. A mixed-methods research design was employed, utilizing pre-tests, post-tests, and teacher surveys to measure students’ progress and gather educators’ perceptions. Additionally, interviews and observation notes provided deeper insights into teachers’ experiences and classroom dynamics. The findings reveal that students who engaged in learning center activities demonstrated improvements in their mathematical abilities. Teachers reported increased engagement, motivation, and hands-on learning among students. However, challenges such as limited resources, time constraints, and space limitations were identified. These findings highlight the significant impact of learning centers in early childhood mathematics education, emphasizing their value in promoting a more engaging and meaningful learning experience.
