AI For All: Bridging the Gap in Stem Education Through Inclusive and Accessible AI-Integrated Learning

Abstract

Educational opportunities in the teaching and learning of science are maximized with Artificial Intelligence (AI) nurtured pedagogical realities. Meanwhile the digital divide between the less connected countries and the advanced world has continued to worsen education inequalities experienced in the underrepresented, marginalized and vulnerable groups of students. Inclusive education to promote for students of all learning styles, gender and across ability/disability levels in the Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) disciplines is still a struggle in developing countries. This study brings to fore, AI and its inherent strengths as a viable tool capable of transforming inclusive education. The prospects of AI technologies could be properly utilized by science educators to modify and augment learning experiences. The various learning experiences as modified by educators to serve various learning purposes according to categories of students, learners’ ability, learners’ disability which would dictate learning needs. The modified learning experiences as tailored by diverse students’ needs ensures learning experiences are commensurate and responsive to students’ needs, encourage equity in students’ access to the same educational content, thereby cultivating inclusivity in the learning environment. Thus, in this study, possible opportunities, prospects, challenges and best practices involved in the integration of AI into STEM education are discussed. Proper integration of AI into STEM education is a certain route to empower all categories of learners the dividends of sound education and opportunity to excel, regardless of their background, ability, learning individuality.
