Language Learning and the Use of Virtual Reality to Promote Global and Linguistic Competence

Abstract

The CEDAR Language Resource Center at the University of Cincinnati (UC) is engaged in creating open-access resources that promote translingual and transcultural competence by creating immersive learning experiences with the use of virtual reality (VR). In this paper we examine samples of learning units that focus on the learning of cultural practices with learning objectives that encompass linguistic as well as cultural competence. The learning units consist of short VR videos in which the learner approaches the content in an interactive manner through viewing and accessing labeling, description and check-in activities while experiencing the immersive environment. The learning units aim at providing learners with communicative practice and language development across the three modes of communication (interpretive, interpersonal and presentational), and at different levels of proficiency, via preview activities, the immersive viewing (VR) experience and post-view activities.
