Simple Tools to Promote Self-reflection, Metacognition, and Academic Integrity in the AI Era

Abstract

Today’s educators face the challenge of addressing students’ increasing dependence on AI, especially in fundamental skills such as writing. Many students, captivated by AI tools that excel in these areas, are prone to premature usage. In this session, I will introduce Process Feedback, a free online tool designed to engage students in thoughtful writing and promote reflection on their work. Process Feedback is a valuable resource for both students and teachers. During a student’s writing process, it visually displays process-related details such as breaks taken, typing fluency, copy-paste events, time spent on each paragraph, and the balance between revision and content creation. The tool facilitates students’ self-exploration and learning from their processes. It also allows them to download all data and charts as a comprehensive PDF report to share with their teachers. This process report includes a link to an interactive online report, enabling teachers to delve deeper into a student’s process as needed. Moreover, its compatibility with Google Docs makes it highly accessible. With these Process Reports, teachers can provide personalized feedback to their students, focusing on the processes involved, not just the outcomes. Our pilot study demonstrated that the adoption of process-oriented tools like Process Feedback enhances students’ learning experiences and empowers educators. The session will conclude with an exploration of how tools like Process Feedback can bolster students’ higher-order thinking skills and best practices for adoption.
