Classifying Retiring Teaching Personnel of Bulacan State University: A Discriminant Analysis

Abstract

Being a public servant has its limit even with lavish commitment in many dimensions. The usual age of retirement in the Philippines is 60 years old with 65 years old as the mandatory age. However, there are government employees who wish to retire early and there are those who want to work beyond the age of retirement. A study is conducted for the case of teaching personnel of Bulacan State University, Philippines on the optimal age of retirement as their willingness and capability to work are measured. As an offshoot, another study is conducted to classify regular faculty members ages 50 years old and above into two classifications: to retire soon or not to retire yet. Using discriminant analysis, a multivariate method, the study discriminates between the two pre-existing classification and derive a classification model for predicting the group membership of new observations. The study generated the probability of belonging to one of the two classifications based on explanatory variables: financial status, health condition, self-worth, attachment to work and motivation to influence others. With this classification model, one can predict if a classification of a retireable personnel given the applicable predictors.
