Integrating Artificial Intelligence Technology in Design Education: A Case Study of a Text to Image Tool in Interior Design Studios

Abstract

As artificial intelligence (AI) technology becomes integral in professional design offices, its incorporation into design education is crucial. This paper describes and evaluates the use of the Text to Image tool in interior design studios to integrate AI technology into students’ design methodology. Drawing from UNESCO’s 2023 Global Education Monitoring (GEM) Report, the presentation addresses the question: can technology improve education? Students use the Text to Image tool to create inspirational images based on color psychology, forming the basis for color palettes in studio projects, specifically in FF&E selections. Results are evaluated through self-assessment by students comparing the tool to traditional methods and by UNESCO’s 2023 GEM Report metrics: appropriateness, equity, scalability, and sustainability. This presentation demonstrates the importance of innovative instruction with AI technology in design education, empowering “digital native” students to incorporate AI into their design skills. Utilizing the Text to Image tool enhances students’ creative process, leading to nuanced design solutions. Evaluation of the exercise offers insights into AI’s efficacy as a teaching tool, contributing to the discourse on technology and pedagogy in higher education.
