Abstract
This study examines the impact of the ageing workforce on productivity in Italy using sector-level panel data provided by ISTAT for the period 2012-2017. The dependent variable is value added per worker, while the main explanatory variables include the percentage of workers over 50. The results show that, overall, an increase in the percentage of workers over 50 is associated with an increase in productivity. However, the effect varies across sectors: in manufacturing and services, the impact is not significant, suggesting that the ageing of the workforce may have different effects depending on sector-specific dynamics. In contrast, in professional activities, the experience and skills of older workers seem to have a very strong positive impact on productivity. Furthermore, the results underline the importance of developing targeted sectoral policies that value the experience of older workers and promote lifelong learning in order to maintain high productivity. In a context of an ageing population, it is crucial to adopt measures that incentivise the participation of older workers in the labor market and promote inclusive working environments.
