Socrates Meets Siri: The Ethics of Human-AI Interaction

Abstract

The rapid development and deployment of artificial intelligence (AI) raises important questions about ethics and responsibilities. This paper argues that the virtuous use of AI requires a Socratic approach to human-AI interaction, prioritizing critical thinking, wisdom, and ethical awareness. The Socratic method emphasizes questioning and dialogue in the pursuit of knowledge and wisdom. In human-AI interaction, this approach enables individuals to gain insight into AI systems’ underlying logic and biases. This fosters a virtuous relationship between humans and machines, recognizing AI’s potential to facilitate human flourishing and wisdom. In contrast to instrumental or exploitative uses of AI, the Socratic approach prioritizes understanding, reflection, and growth. By adopting this approach, individuals can cultivate the techne necessary to harness AI’s potential while minimizing its risks. Ultimately, this paper argues that the virtuous use of AI requires a fundamental shift in how we approach human-AI interaction. By embracing a Socratic approach, we can transform AI into a catalyst for human flourishing and wisdom, prioritizing critical thinking, wisdom, and ethical awareness.
