Abstract
This workshop will facilitate a scholarly exploration of the emergent role of artificial intelligence in writing assessment within the context of communication studies. Employing a participatory design framework, attendees will engage in critical analysis of AI-driven tools, examining their theoretical underpinnings and ethical implications. Drawing upon current research in educational technology and assessment theory, we will investigate the potential of AI to enhance formative and summative evaluation, while addressing concerns regarding bias, validity, and pedagogical impact. This collaborative inquiry will foster a nuanced understanding of AI’s affordances and constraints, culminating in the co-creation of responsible implementation strategies. Participants will have the opportunity to contribute to a peer-reviewed journal article, synthesizing workshop findings and advancing scholarship in this emerging field.
