The Creative Economy, Artificial Intelligence, and Human Replacement: A Protective Belt for Knowledge Workers

Abstract

A creative economy is one in which the standard of living improves primarily through the production of profitable new ideas. This type of economy is complex and evolving, and its current stage of evolution focuses sharply on innovations in automation, with artificial intelligence (AI) playing a fundamental role. As AI continues its unstoppable march forward, the consensus is increasingly clear: AI is reshaping our world. This has profound implications for human replacement in the labour market. One pressing question emerges: How can we, as knowledge workers, become astute participants in the forthcoming waves of automation? In this paper, I explore various conceptual elements and construct a basic “protective belt.” A job consists of individual tasks performed within one’s occupation, each requiring specific skills to be done satisfactorily. The protective belt I propose focuses on these tasks and skills. The paper proceeds in three stages: first, I highlight innovation as an economic activity and the reasons for the dizzying speed of AI development; then, I describe the AI economy paradox in an AI-driven economy; and finally, I identify and elaborate the conceptual elements of the protective belt.
