Peace Innovation: A Conversation

Abstract

Between Sept. 2023 & March 2024, Margarita Quihuis (Executive Director of the Peace Innovation Lab at Stanford University & CEO of PeaceX Ventures), and Ash Rahmani (former Digital Media & Peace Innovation Fellow at the UN-mandated University for Peace, and current Cal State Communications faculty), held monthly extended conversations exploring peace innovation. The AI-generated brief summary of these conversations were that: ‘Ash and Margarita’s discussions on peace innovation emphasized the role of inclusive political settlements, local leadership, and community bonds in fostering peace, with examples like Northern Ireland and possible “Blue Zones of Peace and Innovation.” They highlighted peace as a vital social infrastructure, where innovation often arises in resource-constrained regions. Despite challenges like systemic inequalities and violence, particularly in the US, they remained optimistic about the potential for peace innovation to create harmonious societies through collaboration and inclusive growth.’ In this workshop format, participants will be invited, after a brief overview of some example ideas of peace innovation from the above conversation, to share examples of peace innovation, including as it relates to technological developments, from their own experiences and perspectives.
