Activity-based Working is DEAD

Abstract

The traditional notion of a workplace, typically a designated area within an office building for task execution, has evolved. Modern office designs often utilise activity-based workplace models, focusing on specific actions within operational workplaces. However, the COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted activity-based workplace models limitations, particularly their lack of consideration for the human element. Humans, being complex and diverse, require accommodation across various contexts, especially in workplaces. This research scrutinises the current Smart Working Plus activity-based workplace model at a global life sciences organisation and proposes “The Polycontextual Workplace” concept. This model suggests a timely evolution of traditional global workplace strategies, offering benefits to occupants beyond those of activity-based workplace models. Key components of “The Polycontextual Workplace” include global organisations, sensory processing, intentional connection, mental wellbeing, and physical wellness. A comprehensive literature review reveals that existing activity-based working models fall short in providing inclusive, diverse, and human-centric work environments. The research methodology, which comprises of surveys, interviews, and a validation workshop, reveals that existing activity-based workplace model still offers some value but does fall short in providing inclusive, diverse, and human-centric environments. Could a novel context-based workplace model, transcending a singular focus on activities, foster a more equitable, inclusive, and diverse environment? This human-centric approach warrants exploration. “The Polycontextual Workplace” could potentially provide spaces catering to various human contexts, promoting work-life integration and user flourishing. This research could redefine our understanding of effective workplace design.
