A Pedagogical Shift in Teaching Fashion Design Basics towards Gen-Z : The Importance of Divergent Thinking in Design Teaching/Learning

Abstract

Design education has transformed significantly over the past decade, driven by Gen-Z’s access to global learning platforms, advanced technologies, high-speed internet, and diverse channels for idea exchange. This accessibility fosters curiosity while creating a sense of urgency to excel and adapt. Today’s design students engage directly with markets from the outset of their education, necessitating a dynamic approach to teaching that integrates diverse disciplines, perspectives, and inspirations. The traditional linear method of teaching design basics may no longer suffice. Modern industries value designers who create intuitive, user-centered experiences that prioritize emotional connections over mere aesthetics. With rapid technological advancements and AI-integrated design tools reshaping visual landscapes, adaptability and flexibility have become essential traits for future designers. This research examines innovative pedagogical methods that inspire creativity and engagement among undergraduate students in the fashion design program at the World University of Design, Sonepat, India. The findings reveal that these approaches not only encourage distinctive and impactful creative outcomes but also emphasize the importance of strong communication skills, enabling graduates to effectively articulate design concepts to clients, stakeholders, and team members for seamless collaboration. By equipping students with holistic learning strategies and practical skills, this approach fosters confident and adaptive designers capable of thriving in an ever-evolving industry.
