Abstract
Traditional markets, known for their vibrant activities, have drawn visitors not only for transactions but also for leisure and cultural experiences. However, their appeal has waned in recent years, primarily due to the rise of digital marketplaces. This study explores how architectural design theory, integrated with digital technology, can enhance the vitality of traditional markets, transforming them into leisure-based places, while preserving their cultural significance. Focusing on the concept of radical placemaking, this research examines how digital technology can revive traditional markets by adding new layers of meaning to their existence. The case study of Pasar Pabean, with its diverse blend of ethnicities engaged in trade, leisure, and other activities, provides a unique example of a market that functions as a leisure-oriented space. Data collecting methods include a literature review and precedent studies to identify key design principles. Additionally, interviews are conducted to explore participants’ experiences and perceptions of leisure activities and accessibility challenges within the market. Observation is also employed to validate interview findings, enabling the identification of social interaction patterns and technology usage within the market context. Architectural aspects such as building mass, circulation, and atmosphere can help revitalize traditional markets, ensuring their resilience, sustainability, and continued relevance through radical placemaking. The transformation of traditional markets like Pasar Pabean can bridge the gap between heritage and modernity, fostering inclusive spaces that thrive as centers of community interaction and leisure.
