Abstract
As part of a discussion about an acute shortage of built spaces, in the architecture department in Bezalel Academy for art and design and in the world in general, we gave up the right to have a workspace for the studio, not out of compulsion, but out of choice to create a critical situation and appeals to thinking about space in a “different” way. This lack of awareness invited first year Architecture students at the beginning of their journey to face questions such as: What is a space? What creates a space? Who does it belong to and how do we behave when we do not have a concrete or private space? The program for the semester project was the immediate need for a workspace, in a physical framework for the existence of the studio. During the semester, the students examined the opportunities embedded in the public space and unused spaces in the department’s buildings and engaged in the construction of an alternative studio space. The lack of disability, uncertainty and constraints They created a great space for invention, for searching, for improvisation, for curiosity, for passion, for the joy of doing, for being adventurous, for imagination, for criticism, and above all for dealing with not knowing. As studio lecturers, we took a huge risk, and responsibility for what seemed like guaranteed failure, which allowed the students (once they found out) to free themselves from all fear and simply act, enjoy and learn.
