Abstract
To stay compliant with the shifting demands of the creative industry, the Bachelor of Arts (Hons) Design Communication programme introduced a carefully crafted initiative – “By Invitation Only”, featuring a unique mentorship programme that facilitates proper implementation of industry-led projects with design alumni as part of the Industry and Community Engagement module in the School of Design Communication. The initiatory round centres on the formative integration of design education and industry with an introduction to the briefs proposed to the students, involving alumni of the programme, who are working in different professional fields. Results in the second cycle not only reveal favourable results, stemming from measures implemented from the preceding exercise that incorporate more multidisciplinary engagements but also galvanise the reciprocity and the importance of alumni mentors as the robust connection between the students and the professional workplace. Employing a mix-method primary research of surveys and interviews with the participating students and the alumni mentors during the project, this approach will help to further refine the proposed framework applied in the initial cycle and provide a dependable working archetype for industry partners and design programmes through insights reviewed, to adopt beyond the current rigid model of internship in the post-COVID classroom.
