From Biomaterials to Well-being: The Impact of Biodegradable Materials on Sustainable Fashion from Materials Thinking

Abstract

Global population growth and accelerated industrialisation have led to over-consumption of resources, becoming the focus of global concern. Therefore, there is an urgent need to find environmentally friendly and sustainable solutions. Degradable materials have become a hot topic in design because of their great potential to reduce environmental pollution and promote a circular economy. This paper explores the impact of degradable materials on sustainability in the design from the perspective of materials thinking. It first reviews the development history of biodegradable materials and analyses the contribution of their eco-friendly properties to the reduction of ecological footprint. The application of biomaterials in fashion design is then analysed through a case study approach. In design practice, clothing was inspired by the Eight Trigrams in ancient Chinese philosophy. The design not only embodies the eco-friendly properties of the material but also demonstrates the integration of modern and traditional elements to achieve a harmonious symbiosis between design innovation and cultural heritage. It also explores the practical applications for promoting sustainable fashion, revealing the crucial role of designers in the construction of sustainable design systems. By combining the theoretical study of biodegradable materials with the practical practice of design, this study not only provides a new perspective of material thinking in the field of fashion design but also promotes the practice of social innovation and sustainable development. This research has inspired designers to think about sustainable materials in a new way, thus promoting a sustainable new design system that contributes to human well-being.
