Abstract
This paper investigates the transformative potential of digital tools in enhancing public participation in urban design, with a focus on metaverse platforms and artificial intelligence. Insights from the OSMOSI project in Milan and Palermo illustrate the application of technologies such as generative AI and metaverse platforms within urban planning processes. In Milan, BASE collaborated with the Municipality of Milan, Avanzi, and Codici to repurpose a Customs House near the Darsena. The project’s visual identity was developed by students from the School of Design at the Politecnico di Milano. Known as Open Casello, this initiative empowers youth to curate and manage the space, creating a dynamic environment for community engagement and growth. In Palermo, the FARM Cultural Park is creating a “Museum of the City of the World” in a historical building in the old town, in collaboration with local communities and young people. Both BASE and FARM Cultural Park engage international audiences, broadening the scope and impact of their projects. The study presents a structured approach comprising four stages: Ethnographic Research, Stakeholder Mapping, Creative Workshop, and Scenario Sharing. Each stage illustrates how digital tools can foster rich, collaborative environments that significantly enhance public participation and inform urban planning. The findings highlight practical strategies and methodologies for implementing inclusive, co-design practices in urban development projects. Ultimately, these practices contribute to more sustainable and community-driven urban landscapes, underscoring the pivotal role of digital innovation in modern urban design.
