Tackling the Projected Population Boom in Nigeria: Use of Government-Sponsored Communication Campaigns to Facilitate Uptake of Family Planning/Reproductive Health Services in Rural Communities

Abstract

With the population of Nigeria projected to explode by 2050, experts have predicted that this overpopulation will have grave negative economic and social consequences. By way of controlling this population explosion, the Nigerian government has embarked on campaigns to facilitate the awareness and uptake of family planning and reproductive health services, especially among the rural populations. This study explores how effective these communication campaigns have been and if they will influence attitudes towards family planning in rural areas in Nigeria and reduce the projected overpopulation in the set time. Also, what are the factors that mitigate the impact of the communication campaigns in facilitating the awareness and uptake of family planning and reproductive health services, especially among the rural populations?
