Social Protection and Sustainable Development Goals: An Assessment from Ghana

Abstract

The positive economic and social gains of social protection and its relevance to sustainable development goals places it at the forefront of the global agenda towards realizing sustainable development goals. This paper focuses on evaluating recent social protection programmes in Ghana and examining and how they align with the global agenda for achieving sustainable development goals. The paper provides a comprehensive assessment of recent progress in Ghana’s social protection and identifies relevant gaps to guide future social protection mechanisms to enhance national efforts to achieve sustainable development goals. Document analysis and review of relevant literature were used. The results revealed twenty-six (26) individual policies and programmes. Also, each social protection contributes to SDGs with six SDGs being prominent in the nexus. Extensive efforts need to be put in place to improve the nexus of social protection and other SDGs before 2030.
