Rebuilding Farming Communities in the Aftermath of Floods

Abstract

Floods have devastating impacts on farming communities, causing crop damage, soil erosion and loss of livestock. District Charsadda is one of the districts affected by severe floods in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. This study explores the impact of floods on farming communities and their strengths in their rebuilding process. The study adopted a qualitative approach to understanding the impacts of floods and the rebuilding process of flood-affected farming communities. Floods affected the social and economic lives of farming communities, causing damage to agriculture and displacement of poor farmers. In the rebuilding process, various social institutions such as Hujra, community organizations, the mosque, and the traditions of Pakhtunkhwali were found to be the local strengths of communities in their rebuilding process. However, participants were found critical of the role of Hujra and government organizations as biased and used for political scoring in the rebuilding process. The study acknowledges the role of local organizations in the rebuilding process and suggests fairness and impartiality in the aid distribution process.
