Abstract
This research investigated the impacts of droughts, extreme weather events, contribution of women, and challenges women face in agriculture sector, in the two regions – Sigatoka and Ba, Fiji, and examines the challenges faced by the inland communities in Fiji’s agriculture due to climate change, recommending strategies that can be implemented to deal with the challenges discovered. The two study sites are agriculture intensive (some villages are high exporters of fruits and vegetables), and are facing extreme weather impacts on their farmland, and in this, women often tend to face a lot of hinderance when it comes to their contribution. As a result, it is urgently necessary to start to take mitigation and adaptation action in the agriculture sector. It is essential that the development of climate agricultural policy recognizes the important contribution that women have played and the evolving roles of women in agriculture in Fiji. Historically, there has been under appreciation of women’s contribution, complications, and struggles associated with climate change and agriculture. There is a need to gather more data on the evolving role of women in agriculture in Fiji in the face of climate change and this project will contribute to providing data and information for policy development in this area. This study encompasses a qualitative research method whereby 5 villages were chosen in the Sigatoka region, and 3 villages were chosen from the Ba region. On the basis of Purposive Sampling Method, a total of twenty-four representatives were selected from both regions.
