Abstract
This study analyzes the impact of rainfall shocks on academic performance gaps in Colombia, between students from urban and rural areas, and between students from public and private schools. Data from standardized tests and rainfall measures at the school level are used. Linear regression models are estimated and the Oaxaca-Blinder decomposition method is applied within the framework of unconditional quantile regression. The main results suggest that rainfall shocks reduce students’ academic performance. This effect is greater for students in higher quantiles and for those who attend rural schools. Findings also suggest that rainfall shocks partly contribute to explaining gaps in academic performance.
